Metelec’s business is all about sustainability. The rapid expansion of electrification across many sectors plus the conversion to green and clean energy generation and storage requires copper and copper alloy. We believe our role is to supply products in the most sustainable way possible.

The world is facing a range of environmental and social challenges, not least climate change and resource scarcity. At Metelec, we take our responsibility to help build a more sustainable future for all extremely seriously.

Contributing to a sustainable future

Sustainability runs through the core of the Metelec business model.

Copper and copper alloy are key materials in the environment-benefiting electrification of many sectors, as well as the move towards green and clean energy generation and storage. Our role is to not only supply the copper products required to enable the electrification and green energy revolution, but also to do so in the most sustainable way possible.

Fully recycled

Our copper is sourced via our parent companies Gindre and UMCOR from a fully recycled source. Large-scale primary copper smelting is carried out by Montanwerke Brixlegg in Austria from a one hundred per cent recycled source, dramatically reducing the burden of primary mined copper production.

Hydropower reduces our CO2

We use hydropower from water running from the Alps to deliver the lowest possible carbon footprint. Our recent improvements, backed by certification, demonstrate 0.629 tonnes CO2 equivalent per tonne of copper, compared with an industry average of 3.965.

Conserving natural resources

Recycling copper has many benefits. It conserves natural resources, as copper is a finite resource and mining new copper can have negative environmental impacts. Recycling copper also requires less energy than mining and refining new copper, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.

Helping our supply chain become more sustainable

We are committed to supporting all parties in our supply chain to improve their own sustainability credentials.

Increasingly, we are recovering scrap from our customers to be returned to our group facilities in France and Austria to be remelted. We are proud to be an active participant in the recycling and upcycling chain. Working smartly together we can be less of a burden on the planet for the production and distribution of our products.

Moving in the right direction

Alongside our approach to sustainable products, we have also invested more than £200,000 in low-emission transport to distribute our products. This complements our all-electric company vehicle fleet.

Investing in the future

Metelec is committed to being the very best supply chain partner we can be. We work collaboratively with customers to achieve shared goals and create value.

A new state-of-the-art distribution centre and headquarters reflect our commitment to solid, sustainable growth.

Our new facility has immediate access to the UK motorway network at Junction 1 of the M54. Rated BREEAM Excellent for insulation and thermal efficiency, we utilise solar panels for zero carbon manufacturing using our state-of-the-art all-electric CNC machinery.
